Responsive Environments: A Manual For Designers, Korean Edition, Architectural Press

Translation of Bentley et al., Architectural Press

In 2017, Professor Sunny Choi published the Korean translation of Responsive Environments: A Manual for Designers, originally authored by Ian Bentley, Alan Alcock, Paul Murrain, Sue McGlynn, and Graham Smith (Architectural Press, 1985). This seminal text is widely recognized as one of the most influential manuals on urban design and place-making, offering practical guidance for creating environments that are socially responsive, adaptable, and supportive of human activity.

The Korean edition makes this important work accessible to designers, architects, planners, and students in Korea, expanding its reach and impact in shaping discourse on urban design in East Asia. The translation maintains the clarity and pedagogical strength of the original, while situating its ideas in dialogue with contemporary challenges of Korean cities.

The book addresses key design principles, including permeability, variety, legibility, robustness, visual appropriateness, richness, and personalization, that continue to define best practice in urban design education and professional work. By providing this translation, Professor Choi has contributed to the international exchange of urban design knowledge and facilitated a deeper engagement with human-centered design approaches in the Korean context.
