Day 29: 100 Days 100 Projects

What does new town and compact city development mean in the case of Hong Kong?
How are these forms of development being used to provide satellite accommodation to alleviate the pressure of population density in the centre of Hong Kong. How do the outcomes differ from the outcomes in Europe and the U.S.? Does a form of development that is intrinsic to Hong Kong emerge?

Hong Kong has only a limited amount of land available to build new housing and faces difficulty to accommodate all the population on what’s available, so most of new town development, particularly large scale development, is constructed on man-made reclamation land, then linked with public transport termini. From the terminus walkways link to the surrounding development and shared facilities. Consequently, the ground level seems ‘left out’ or subservient to the development. Although there is a smell of the sea and a view of the mountains, for the most part residents spend their time either commuting or within the walkway and podium complex to and from their apartment blocks. This is a convenient way to live, but also a bit bizarre to experience this city ‘without ground”
