New elevated walkway in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong
Quarry Bay is an urban district on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island where construction is underway to create a new urban landscape, Taikoo Square. Circling above this will be a series of interior elevated walkways linking this new landscape with the surrounding commercial buildings and Quarry Bay MTR station. This new elevated route replaces an earlier walkway and series of buildings where there was very limited interaction and engagement between the first floor interior realm and the exterior ground. The new walkway has increased access and linkage between these two levels, with stairs and lift cars between which it is hoped will increase the usage of the outdoor space. The physical access is supported by the high visibility of the floor-to-ceiling glazing on the walkway.
Now the first phase of this new open space and the new tower One Taikoo Place have opened. But let’s see how the character and cultural engagement of this series of privately owned spaces and walkways will evolve, whether the user group will not just be the local office tenants, but also surrounding residents and visitors.
