Day 27: 100 Days 100 Projects

Dominion garden

The district of Wan Chai in Hong Kong grew in the late nineteenth century as a busy trading port, which brought development and industry including Edwardian terraced buildings, small metal craft workshops, a thriving Catholic community and Hong Kong’s first electrical power station. Through the twentieth century the character of the district slowly changed, with some areas going into decline. As part of a public-private partnership the south-western part of Wanchai has been redeveloped in an attempt to arrest the decline and revitalise a historic district, introducing a more modern and accessible environment for its inhabitants whilst preserving memories of the area’s colourful past.

However, what is missing in this garden?
Although the park has been revitalized in terms of is accessibility, well-designed street chairs, floor patterns and signage, this park is not one of the most existing public space to gather or visit. Perhaps because it is too open to a busy road to create a sense of enclosure. Flowing water, movable chairs, and little steps in the entrance part to divide the function from the pavement to the park where people can bring coffee and newspapers to read facing the waterfall rather than facing shops and vehicles, and located them as personal space to be.
